Roots, Untitled

"Roots, Untitled" © Paula Pertile
11 x 17, Polychromo pencils on Stonehenge paper

Its done. *Whew*
I'm stuck on the title. I've come up with every obvious, lame, 'trying too hard' pun on 'roots' or anything related. Roots en route. Roots Unbound. Flying veggies. I may just keep "Roots, Untitled ". I don't know.

But I'm pretty happy with it. I learned a lot on this one, and did a lot of discovery and felt like I was actually making art, rather than just rendering something, the same old way. The beets were particularly challenging. There are a lot of colors in them thar beets. A lot. Caput mortuum came to the rescue, once again. Its my favorite color in the box.

I was going to put a rectangle of color behind part of the stems to make them 'pop', and tie them in to the last piece, but decided against it.

Oh! And as Leslie mentioned in the comments in the last post, yes, the 'roots' and hairs do bring to mind my yarn pieces with all the little fuzzies. I guess I have a thing for doing squiggly wild haired things, how weird is that.

And CC, I did roast the veggies along with some potatoes, and they were yummy. Thanks for the suggestion!

Now its back to being a children's book illustrator for a while.

WOW! These came out GREAT! I love the intense color of the beet. How about 'Good for You' for a title, because these root veggies are...good for you! Have a wonderful day!

Really nice. The colors are gorgeous.

Fabulous!! And I am so glad you left out the rectangle. There's something wonderful about the juxtaposition of Roots, normally anchored in the ground, suddenly loose from their earthly
bounds. Pulling up roots, the second they're on their way. LOVE IT!!

Glad you enjoyed the roasted veggies.I told you so.

Lovely Paula - beautifully rendered and whimsical - my favorite combination. Personally, I like "Roots and Wings". :-)

Beautiful piece Paula! Fabulous composition and as you said, there sure is a lot of colour in them thar beets!! I personally think that titles should come from the artist and I am often hopeless at titles anyway - so I hope something brilliant comes to you. Give it time to filter up from your subconscious! :-)

Oh my goodness. This is amazing. I almost want to say either Falling Veggies or Floating Veggies. Beautiful Paula

My favorite part is the radish at the bottom as well.

How about 'Enyarn'. Makes no sense, but it's replacing a pun on root with yarn, which it does look like.

Woah, Paula. Lovely piece. I have always loved caput mortem, even though the name is off-putting, the color is unique. I like Leslie's "Unearthed" and ranjini's "Garden Tips". Your image really captures the reaching down which is what roots do best.

Any names I could think off sounded very corny but I just had to tell you what a great piece this is. I LOVE that beet!

Paula, This is beautiful! So much more interesting than a bowl of fruit or veggies:) Great work, but since I've been following your blog, this is no surprise!

Great finish, Paula! Such a creative composition and the colours are wonderful. I like Caput Mortuum too, a nice dark purply hue - perfect for your beet. :)
