So you wanna be a ...

These are too funny! And spot-on, both of them.

This first one is verbatim what we illustrators get from well-meaning children's book writer/illustrator wannabes, all the time. Bless them.

And this one is about someone from the same gene pool, except she wants to be an architect. I studied architecture before I switched over to illustration, so can attest to the accuracy of this one too. (Although I got out while I was still in the 'drafting stairs' phase, long before the 'smoking two packs a day and living in a box by the freeway' stage. Thankfully.)

Hi ho! Happy New Year! I'm back at work and can 'visit' your blog on the Internet again (New Year's Resolution: get Internet at my house!). And I've just read through all the blogs I missed. Hope your holidays were good!

The little films cracked me up too. I get a lot of that kind of thinking in my job. People always want to know how come you 'can't just push a button.....' and the computer automatically spits out what you need. ....doesn't work like that....

Look at all those swatches! Holy Cow! You did good! I BET they're a good reference, to keep that many colors sorted out and 'where they should be' so you can use them, that's a project in itself!

Many Congrats! on the shortbread award. THE FOOD NETWORK?? Whoa!! You did GOOD! So glad they liked it. I think it's adorable cute; the makin's of a Christmas card somewhere in the future, I think!

I like the pantry idea. And your pics of pantries; they DO look interesting, don't they.... Me, I'm just hoping that the next home I live in HAS a pantry! Yes, must have capers.....

And the cats, how talented are THEY, writing the blog for you. Good little helper cats! Yes, that one cat really does look like Saachi!

Happy 2011 to all!

That publishing one is sadly too too spot on (I may need to steal). I've had way too many variations of that same conversation...

I didn't know that about you--the architecture thing. About a year ago, we had dinner with the State architect--a work friend of Geoff's. He told me that in his State job he never designed *anything*--spent nearly all of his time checking other people's plans.
The book video's are so right on. The manuscript an aspiring author sent me recently is SO laughably bad; I wish I could share it, but wouldn't be at all ethical--or nice.

Hysterical! Having been in the publishing world for the last ten years or so, I recognize the behavior only too well.

The first clip also reminds me of some consultations with potential floral clients. People underestimate how much work is involved in creating a beautiful setting and they also don't understand that stealing ideas is no different from stealing physical items.

The second clip has cured me once and for all from wishing I became an architect instead of a computer scientist. I probably got as little sleep during college as the average architecture student, and I only smoked one pack a day for about ten years, but at least I ended up with a satisfying, well-paying career where I got to meet all my clients.

Thanks for sharing!
